*PEX piping, or cross-linked polyethylene piping, is
a flexible plastic tubing that's becoming a popular alternative to copper pipes in plumbing. PEX is made by chemically or physically modifying the molecular structure of polyethylene so that its polymer chains are permanently linked. This process, called crosslinking, gives PEX many improved properties, including:
- Flexibility: PEX can bend and curve around obstacles, making it easier to install in tight spaces and feed through a home without getting stuck.
- Durability: PEX is highly durable and can last at least 50 years.
- Resistance: PEX is resistant to corrosion, erosion, mineral buildup, and environmental stress cracking. It's also energy conservative because it doesn't spread heat quickly.
- Affordability: PEX costs about one-third the price of copper pipes.
PEX is safe for drinking water in households and commercial systems, and has been third-party tested to meet NSF/ANSI 61 standards. However, PEX is not suitable for outdoor use because it can be damaged by exposure to UV rays and freezing temperatures. If you do install PEX piping outdoors, you should insulate it properly before burying it in the ground or hiding it under concrete slabs.
PEX piping also has other applications, such as radiant floor heating, where it can provide even heat distribution, improved indoor air quality, and noise-free operation.
